Richard George Manuel is a Canadian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the pianist and lead vocalist of The Band. The five members existed since December 1961 as The Hawks, became The Band in 1967, disbanded in 1976, then re-established in 1983. Manuel stayed with them until he committed suicide in 1986, hours after the Band performed a performance. Manuel's vocals alternate between a soul-influenced male voice often like Ray Charles and a subtle falsetto. Although The Band has three singers sharing the main vocal part and harmony, but Manuel is often considered the main vocal of the group.
