Millions of Americans can get free money in $190m settlement with major US bank - but there are only

MILLIONS of Americans are eligible for free cash under a new Capital One settlement.

A class action lawsuit has been settled and emails have started going out to those who are eligible to receive a payout.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The lawsuit stemmed from a 2019 cyberattack.

Four years ago, a hacker gained access to the personal information of 106million Capitol One credit card holders.

The company has been transparent about the attack, and the information they believed was stolen.

"Based on our analysis, this event affected approximately 100million individuals in the United States and approximately 6million in Canada," the company said in a statement on its website.

"Importantly, no credit card account numbers or log-in credentials were compromised and less than one percent of Social Security numbers were compromised. In addition, the outside individual who took the data was captured by the FBI," Capital One said.

"The government has stated they believe the data has been recovered and that there is no evidence the data was used for fraud or shared by this individual."

The largest category of information that was taken was from individuals and small businesses that applied for a card in 2005 through early 2019.

The hacker gained access to everything the company routinely collects at the time it receives credit card applications, including names, addresses, zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and self-reported income, according to Capital One.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

The lawsuit has now been settled for $190million, and Capital One is ready to start cutting checks to victims.

The company started sending emails to customers last week who opted into the lawsuit settlement last year.

It addresses recipients by their first and last names and indicates how much their payment will be.

However, this email is a "courtesy email" - simply informing customers they will soon be getting another email which will contain a link to claim their payment.

This claim must be made by November 27.

The initial deadline to file a claim for out-of-pocket losses was September 30, 2022.

HOW DO I GET PAID?

Payments started going out on September 28, 2023.

You may access restoration services whether or not you made a claim under the Settlement, Capital One said.

You should always be on the lookout for scams when it comes to these type of emails.
