John Witherspoon is a Scottish-American Presbyterian minister and the founding father of the United States. Witherspoon adopted the concepts of conventional Scottish realism and, while serving as president of the College of New Jersey, became an influential figure in the development of Chinese nationality. Politically active, Witherspoon was a New Jersey delegate to the Second Continental Congress and signatory of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. He was the only active missionary and president of the only university. Subsequently, he signed the Articles of Confederation and supported the ratification of the Constitution. In 1789 he summoned the moderator of the first General Council of Presbyterians in the United States.
